What Trump said

On Saturday evening, before the official announcement from India and Pakistan, US President Donald Trump announced on social media platform Truth that the two countries had agreed to a ceasefire “after a long night of talks mediated by the United States”.

“After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE. Congratulations to both Countries on using Common Sense and Great Intelligence. Thank you for your attention to this matter! (sic),” he wrote.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Saturday in a press statement, “Over the past 48 hours, Vice President Vance and I have engaged with senior Indian and Pakistani officials, including Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Shehbaz Sharif, External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Chief of Army Staff Asim Munir, and National Security Advisors Ajit Doval and Asim Malik.”

He added, “I am pleased to announce the Governments of India and Pakistan have agreed to an immediate ceasefire and to start talks on a broad set of issues at a neutral site. We commend Prime Ministers Modi and Sharif on their wisdom, prudence, and statesmanship in choosing the path of peace.”

'Millions could have died'

Trump, on Sunday, in a post on Truth, said if not for the ceasefire, “millions of good and innocent people could have died”.

“I am very proud of the strong and unwaveringly powerful leadership of India and Pakistan for having the strength, wisdom, and fortitude to fully know and understand that it was time to stop the current aggression that could have lead to to the death and destruction of so many, and so much. Millions of good and innocent people could have died! Your legacy is greatly enhanced by your brave actions. I am proud that the USA was able to help you arrive at this historic and heroic decision. While not even discussed, I am going to increase trade, substantially, with both of these great Nations. Additionally, I will work with you both to see if, after a “thousand years,” a solution can be arrived at concerning Kashmir. God Bless the leadership of India and Pakistan on a job well done!!! (sic),” he wrote.

Pakistan violates ceasefire

On Saturday night, within hours of the agreement, Pakistan violated the ceasefire, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said at a late night press briefing.

“For the last few hours, there have been repeated violations of the understanding arrived at earlier this evening… The armed forces are giving an adequate and appropriate response to these violations. We call upon Pakistan to take appropriate steps to address these violations and deal with the situation with seriousness and responsibility,” Misri said.
