Indian blood will flow through Indus river, threatens Bilawal Bhutto

Bhutto, a former foreign minister, said neither Pakistan nor the international community would tolerate Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s "warmongering"

Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari has warned that Indian blood will flow through the Indus river if New Delhi did not allow its water to enter his country.

"The Indus is ours and will remain ours. Either our water will flow through it or their blood will," Bhutto thundered at a public rally on Friday.

Indian acts after Pahalgam

India suspended the Indus Water Treaty after terrorists believed to be from Pakistan shot dead over two dozen Indian tourists and a resident of the Kashmir Valley at Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir on April 22.

It was one of several punitive measures India announced in the wake of the terrorist carnage which drew widespread condemnation. Pakistan too criticised the killings.

Indus water

The treaty, signed in 1960, governs how the waters of six rivers of the Indus basin are utilised and distributed between India and Pakistan.

A suspension of the treaty will have major implications for Pakistan as it provides water for 80 per cent of the country’s agricultural land.

Bhutto targets Modi

Bhutto, a former foreign minister, said neither Pakistan nor the international community would tolerate Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s "warmongering" or bid to divert the Indus waters.

"He (Modi) says they are heirs to a civilisation thousands of years old, but that civilisation lies in Mohenjo Daro in Larkana. We are its true custodians and we will defend it," Bhutto said.

"India is unlawfully abrogating the treaty under which it had acknowledged that the Indus belongs to Pakistan," added Bhutto, whose PPP is allied with Pakistan’s coalition government.

Pakistan’s Bhuttos

Bhutto is the second Pakistani leader after its defence minister Khawaja Asif to target Modi after the latter’s rousing speech at a rally in Bihar.

In a tough message to Pakistan, Modi has vowed to "identify, track and punish" every terrorist and their backers and would "pursue them to the ends of the earth".

Bhutto’s mother Benazir Bhutto was the prime minister of Pakistan while his father Asif Zardari is the current president of Pakistan.
